ABSTRACT
This is the first of a three-part review of aether-drift and light Doppler experiments conducted from the early 1880s to the present day.
Part 1 examines the controversy surrounding contradictory interpretations of
Michelson-Morley-type experiments. In particular, it re-analyzes the 1887
Michelson-Morley experiment and selected experiments by Miller. It concludes
that none of the Michelson-Morley-type experiments conducted from 1881 to 1930
detected a significant aether drift.
